Low-code automation

Integrate WhatsApp with n8n

n8n is a low-code workflow automation platform, often used in a self-hosted version, that connects apps and APIs without requiring a backend of your own. You build automations by dragging nodes onto a visual canvas: the HTTP Request node fires calls to any REST API and the Webhook node listens for external events. Since it speaks plain HTTP, n8n talks to practically any service, including ZapZap API, without needing a dedicated official connector.

Why connect

Connecting ZapZap API to n8n turns WhatsApp into a trigger and an output channel inside your flows. Picture a clinic: a new appointment lands in a spreadsheet, n8n detects the row, calls ZapZap API through the HTTP Request node and sends the confirmation to the patient's WhatsApp right away. In the opposite direction, every incoming message arrives by webhook at an n8n Webhook node, which can query a CRM, trigger the instance's AI or forward the lead to a salesperson. Since ZapZap API uses managed unofficial numbers, with community warm-up and anti-ban features, you automate support while lowering the risk of volume-based restrictions, something the official API locks down. It costs R$15 per active number/month, prepaid, and you start with a welcome credit when you create the account, subject to the current campaign, to test the whole flow before scaling.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Create the instance and get the keys

    In the ZapZap API dashboard, provision a number and copy the instance's x-api-key and x-api-secret. Also keep the base URL https://api.zapzapapi.com. These three items are what n8n will use to authenticate.

  2. 2

    Build the sending workflow in n8n

    In Workflows, click Add workflow, then the + button on the canvas. Add a trigger (for example Manual Trigger to test, or Schedule Trigger for routines) and connect an HTTP Request node to it.

  3. 3

    Configure the HTTP Request node to send a message

    In HTTP Request, set Method to POST and the URL to ZapZap API's sending endpoint (check the exact path at https://api.zapzapapi.com/llms.txt). Under Send Headers, turn it on and add x-api-key and x-api-secret with the instance values. Under Send Body, use JSON with the recipient's number and the text. Click Execute step to run the test.

  4. 4

    Create the Webhook node to receive messages

    In a new flow, add the Webhook node as the trigger. Copy the Production URL it generates and register that address as the webhook URL of your instance in ZapZap API. That way, every event (incoming message, delivery status) lands straight in n8n.

  5. 5

    Activate and handle the events

    Turn on the workflow's Active toggle so the Webhook goes into production. After the Webhook node, add nodes such as IF, Set or another HTTP Request to react: reply automatically, write to a database or notify the team. Close the flow with a Respond to Webhook node if you need to return 200 quickly.

Example

// ILLUSTRATIVE example of the HTTP Request node in n8n (POST)
// Exact fields and path: https://api.zapzapapi.com/llms.txt
POST https://api.zapzapapi.com/api/v1/{instanceId}/send/text
Headers:
  x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY
  x-api-secret: YOUR_API_SECRET
  Content-Type: application/json
Body:
{
  "number": "5511999999999",
  "text": "Hello! Your appointment is confirmed."
}

Illustrative. The exact fields and endpoints are in the documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the self-hosted version of n8n to integrate?

No. The integration works on both n8n Cloud and self-hosted, because everything happens through standard HTTP Request and Webhook nodes. On self-hosted, just make sure the Webhook URL is reachable from the internet so ZapZap API can deliver the events.

How does n8n authenticate with ZapZap API?

Through your instance's x-api-key and x-api-secret headers. In the HTTP Request node, turn on Send Headers and add both. You can save them as Header Auth in Credentials to reuse across several nodes without repeating the values.

Can I receive WhatsApp messages inside n8n?

Yes. Use the Webhook node as the trigger, copy the Production URL and register it as the instance's webhook in ZapZap API. Every incoming message or status change arrives as an event that triggers your flow automatically.

Can WhatsApp automation get my number banned?

Any sending at volume carries risk. ZapZap API works with community warm-up and anti-ban features to lower the risk, but the flow's behavior also counts: avoid mass blasts and identical messages in sequence inside n8n.

How much does it cost to keep this integration running?

ZapZap API charges R$15 per active number per month, on the prepaid model, and offers a welcome credit when you create the account, subject to the current campaign. n8n has its own plan (cloud or free self-hosted), so the cost of the automation itself depends only on how you choose to host it.
