Integrate WhatsApp with Mailchimp

Mailchimp is one of the most widely used email marketing and automation platforms in the world, with contact lists (Audiences), campaigns and Customer Journeys, which orchestrate automated journeys from triggers such as sign-up, tag added or purchase. ZapZap API is an unofficial, instance-based WhatsApp API: every connected number becomes a programmable channel that you trigger with HTTP requests authenticated by x-api-key and x-api-secret. Put the two together and every event that today fires an email in Mailchimp can also fire a WhatsApp message, a channel with a much higher open rate than email.

Why connect

Picture a store that uses Mailchimp to nurture its list by email. When a contact joins the Audience or receives the "abandoned cart" tag, the Customer Journey already sends an email. With the integration, the same point in the journey triggers a webhook that calls ZapZap API and sends a WhatsApp message to the customer reinforcing the offer. The result is multichannel communication: email handles the long content and WhatsApp ensures immediate reading of reminders, confirmations and promotions, raising the conversion rate with no manual work.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Provision your number on ZapZap API

    In the ZapZap API dashboard, create an instance and connect your WhatsApp by scanning the QR Code. Each active number costs R$15 per month on the prepaid model, and you start with a welcome credit when you create the account, subject to the current campaign. Copy your x-api-key and x-api-secret credentials in the API keys area.

  2. 2

    Configure the Webhook on the Mailchimp Audience

    In Mailchimp, go to Audience, select the list, open Settings and click Webhooks. Add the URL of your intermediate endpoint and check the events that should trigger WhatsApp, such as Subscribes or Profile updates. Save so Mailchimp starts sending events with the phone number and contact data.

  3. 3

    Create the journey in Customer Journeys

    For more advanced triggers, go to Automations, open Customer Journeys and click Create Journey. Choose a starting point such as Tag added or Signs up, and add an action journey point that calls your intermediate endpoint when the contact reaches that step.

  4. 4

    Connect the intermediary to ZapZap API

    In your endpoint (n8n, Make or your own server), receive the Mailchimp payload, extract the phone number and make a POST request to ZapZap API's sending endpoint, sending the x-api-key and x-api-secret headers and the message text in the body.

  5. 5

    Test and activate

    Sign up a test contact or apply the tag manually and confirm the message arrives on WhatsApp. Check the logs of Mailchimp and of your intermediary. Once the flow is validated, activate the journey for your whole list.

Example

// ILLUSTRATIVE example: your endpoint receives the Mailchimp webhook
// and triggers WhatsApp via ZapZap API.
// Check the exact endpoints and fields at https://api.zapzapapi.com/llms.txt

const instanceId = "YOUR_INSTANCE";

// req.body comes from the Mailchimp webhook (Customer Journey / Audience)
const numero = req.body.data.merges.PHONE; // contact phone number
const nome = req.body.data.merges.FNAME;      // first name

await fetch(`https://api.zapzapapi.com/api/v1/${instanceId}/send/text`, {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Content-Type": "application/json",
    "x-api-key": process.env.ZAPZAP_API_KEY,
    "x-api-secret": process.env.ZAPZAP_API_SECRET
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    number: numero,
    text: `Hi ${nome}! We saw you signed up. Any questions, just reply here.`
  })
});

Illustrative. The exact fields and endpoints are in the documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mailchimp send straight to WhatsApp?

Not natively. Mailchimp fires a webhook or a Customer Journey point to an intermediate endpoint of yours, and that endpoint calls ZapZap API to send the message on WhatsApp. That intermediary is what bridges the two platforms.

Do I need a paid Mailchimp plan?

Audience Webhooks are available on most plans, but Customer Journeys with more advanced action points depend on your Mailchimp plan. For simple triggers by sign-up or profile update, the basic webhooks are enough.

How much does it cost to use ZapZap API in this integration?

Each active WhatsApp number costs R$15 per month on the prepaid model, and you get a welcome credit when you create the account, subject to the current campaign. You pay only for the connected numbers, with no fee per message sent.

Can I personalize the message with contact data?

Yes. The Mailchimp payload carries merge fields such as FNAME and PHONE. In your intermediary you use that data to build the message before sending it through ZapZap API, making each send personalized with the contact's name and details.

Is ZapZap API an official WhatsApp API?

No. ZapZap API is an unofficial, instance-based solution in which you connect your own number by QR Code. All communication goes through the API with x-api-key and x-api-secret authentication, without depending on Meta's official API.
